Congressman Brian Baird U.S. House of Representatives
Dear Congressman Baird:
The City Council of Kelso, Washington, supports all efforts to restore Amtrak’s Pioneer Train along the Seattle-Portland-Denver route and encourages Amtrak, the National Rail Passenger Corporation, in those efforts. We feel that restoration of the Amtrak connection between the Central Rocky Mountain Region and Kelso/Longview will spur travel that is often difficult with the available public transportation providers, and will thus, generate economic activity.
Trains are an environmentally friendly mode of travel that can substantially reduce transportation generated carbon emissions. The City of Kelso has long been committed to the support of environmentally friendly means of travel as an alternative to congested roads and airways. Trains facilitate travel for those who are unable, for whatever reasons, to drive or fly.
Kelso is quite proud of our beautiful train station, which we would like to see fulfill its capacity to receive more trains at any time. The city approved the renovation of our historical train station, and is currently launching a volunteer station host program to assist travelers.
Please find attached a copy of the signed resolution, dated the 5th of May, 2009. We are asking that our representatives in Congress act so as to give effect to this Resolution passed by the City of Kelso. We see a full range of train connections and a thriving train station as an important part of Kelso’s future economic vitality, and the City’s appeal to residents and visitors alike.
Thank you for your support in this project that is critical to Kelso and the region.
Sincerely,
David Futcher, Mayor |
